Atlas Mountains

جبال الأطلس

The Atlas Mountains form a dramatic mountain rampart stretching across Morocco, crowned by Mount Toubkal at 4,167 meters—the highest peak in North Africa. Separating the fertile Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines from the Saharan desert wilderness, the High Atlas features soaring snow-capped massifs, dramatic red-rock gorges, terraced walnut valleys, and centuries-old Amazigh (Berber) adobe settlements.

Geological Architecture & Topography

Geology: The High Atlas is an intraplate folded mountain chain born from tectonic collision between the African and Eurasian plates during the Cenozoic era, accompanied by the tectonic inversion of ancient Mesozoic rift basins. The core of the range exposes Precambrian crystalline basement rocks and Paleozoic metamorphic schists, flanked by dramatic Mesozoic marine limestone, red sandstone cliffs, and volcanic basalt extrusions. Glacial cirques, scree slopes, and deep fluvial canyons like Todra and Dades illustrate millions of years of active tectonic uplift and hydraulic weathering. Natural History: The range forms an ecological bioclimatic bridge, transitioning from Mediterranean mountain forests of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica), evergreen holm oak, and juniper to semi-arid alpine steppe at high altitudes. Fauna includes endangered Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus), Atlas mountain vipers, golden eagles, bearded vultures (lammergeier), and Cuvier's gazelles inhabiting protected valleys within Toubkal National Park.
