Chefchaouen
شفشاون
Chefchaouen is Morocco’s famed "Blue Pearl," dramatically nestled in the rugged fold of the northern Rif Mountains beneath the twin horns of Jebel Tisouka and Jebel Meggou. Founded in 1471 as a mountain fortress, the town is celebrated for its labyrinth of cobalt-washed medina alleys, mountain springs at Ras El Maa, and direct access to the dramatic limestone gorges, natural stone arches, and turquoise river canyons of Talassemtane National Park.

Geological Architecture & Topography
Geology: Chefchaouen and the surrounding Talassemtane massif belong to the Dorsale Calcaire of the internal Rif chain, a northern sector of the Gibraltar Arc formed during the Alpine-Himalayan orogeny. The terrain consists of massive Jurassic-to-Cretaceous karstified limestone and dolomite thrust over flysch units. Millions of years of groundwater dissolution and fluvial incision by Oued Farda and Oued Kelaa carved sheer vertical canyons, subterranean cave networks, and the spectacular "God's Bridge" (Pont de Dieu)—a 25-meter-high natural rock arch suspended across a dramatic limestone canyon. Natural History: The Mediterranean mountain forest ecosystem of Talassemtane provides the last worldwide refuge for the endangered Moroccan fir (Abies pinsapo var. marocana), alongside cork oak, holm oak, maritime pine, and wild olive groves. The rich riparian corridor formed by limestone karst springs supports clean river habitats populated by Barbary macaques, Eurasian otters, mountain raptors like the Bonelli's eagle, and diverse endemic North African amphibians.
